Walking on Drift Ice
Aoi Aso Shrine was built about 1,200 years ago, and was the first cultural asset in Kumamoto Prefecture to be designated as a national treasure. It features a straw-thatched roof, and is a rare example of a shrine in Japan where all the shrine buildings were built during the same period. The four corners of the romon gate are fitted with pairs of devil masks in a style called "Hitoyoshi-yoshiki," which is not found anywhere else in Japan. The main building, which was completed in 1613, conveys the design principles of medieval era Kuma, as well as the architectural style of the Momoyama period.
