Harajiri Falls

The city of Bungo Ono is a natural paradise of scenic mountains, dense forests, golden rice fields, and greenery, located just a stone’s throw from the prefectural capital of Oita City and easily accessible by car or train. Within striking distance, Harajiri Falls, whose beautiful horseshoe-shaped form has led to them being nicknamed the Oriental Niagara, are an unmissable sight. At an impressive 120 meters wide and 20 meters high, no wonder they were chosen as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and Oita Prefecture's Top 100 Landscapes.

If you can’t get enough of the sheer power and beauty of crashing water, nearby you’ll also find Chinda Falls, a double waterfall just under 20 meters high and some 100 meters or so across. Another spot in the area worth the visit is the Inazumi Underwater Cave. The region is home to numerous deer, and is also a center for shiitake mushroom farming, as well as other delicacies including beef, sweet potatoes and sake.
