Walking on Drift Ice
Misumi West Port was recognized as a world heritage site in July 2015, as a Site of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining. The port opened in 1887, and was one of three major harbor constructions of the Meiji era. A modern harbor city was built in just three years, and equipped with trade, administration, and judiciary facilities. Many facilities, including the Meiji period stone wharf, are still preserved in almost their original form. This is the last example of an intact Meiji era port in Japan.
